The sap was flowing and so were the cars. More than 350 people came to Sugar Moon Farm to celebrate our first public Slow Food Day to honour Spring, maple syrup and local food.
In addition, 44 Slow Food people toured the sugar bush, tasted the various grades of maple syrup and enjoyed a meal of Red Fife pancakes, blueberries, Berkshire sausage and plenty of maple syrup inspired side dishes.
It was great to see so many children at the event, learning where that bottle of maple syrup comes from. And even thought it was 20 degrees, the popular “sugar on snow” treat was a big hit with kids of all ages.
Ann Doyle of Fresh Air Foods provided the special Sugar Moon Berkshire sausage which debuted on the Slow Food menu. Ann got a lot of positive feedback from the public and some suggestions which reinforces how Slow Food helps bring producers and consumers together. Fresh Air Foods full line of meats and sausage are available at their stall in the Halifax Farmers Market.
Craig Flinn from Chives Canadian Bistro contributed a great dessert featuring a wonderful maple ice cream.
Many thanks to Sugar Moon owners and Slow Food members, Quita Gray and Scott Whitelaw for a tasty start to the Slow Food season
