The Order of Good Cheer was established by Samuel de Champlain in Port Royal, Nova Scotia (Acadia) in 1606. It was the first gastronomic society in North America.

Each day, a settler would gather local game, fish, fruits and plants with the help of the Mi’Kmaq First Nation people to produce that nights supper. There was music and great celebration as the tiny settlement enjoyed each others company and a pleasant meal.

Slow Food Nova Scotia exists to honour this tradition of experiencing the taste of local food in a social and convivial atmosphere through excursions to farms, special dinners, tastings and public projects.

These are our principles:

1. To promote good, clean and fair food from local producers.

2. To encourage good growing practises especially organic and sustainable methods.

3. To preserve our culinary history and culture so that we have diversity in our food choices.

4. To reconnect producers and consumers so they can educate each other.

We are part of the worldwide Slow Food Movement
